Armenian President Serge Sargsyan refused to participate in the NATO summit in Chicago. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic. It is reported that such a decision by Sargsnil made due disagreement with the draft Alliance Declaration on the resolution of regional conflicts, which is unacceptable for Yerevan.
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandan at a meeting with representatives of the Armenian community Chicago noted that the NATO summit declarations included “surface wording” regarding the Karabakh problem.
The conflict of Armenia and Azerbaijan due to Nagorno-Karabakh began in February 1988, when the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region (NKAO), populated mainly by Armenians, announced the exit from the Azerbaijan SSR. The official Baku recognized this act illegal and abolished the autonomy of Karabakh that existed in the Soviet years.
The armed conflict lasted until May 12, 1994, when a ceasefire agreement entered into force. Azerbaijan has lost control of the Nagorno -Karabakh family adjacent areas. As a result of hostilities, approximately 25-30 thousand people died and about a million people became refugees.
