The Belogorsk garrison military court found the head of the storage department of one of the military units in the Amur region, senior lieutenant Vladimir Arapov, guilty of negligence, Interfax reports with reference to the prosecutor's office of the Eastern Military District on Thursday, May 24.
“It was established that in October 2010, work was carried out in the military unit’s storage facility to prepare for the destruction of unusable ammunition. Arapov was appointed senior worker of the work team, which included conscripted military personnel. In the process, he left the technical territory of the unit,” the report says.
According to the department, taking advantage of the officer’s absence, one of the soldiers took an RPG-26 hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher in order to take a photo with it. Leaving the room with the soldiers, he raised the aiming bar of the grenade launcher, which brought it into a firing position, after which he accidentally pulled the trigger. The shot caused the detonation of ammunition in the storage facility.
