Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador again does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Mexico

The presidential elections in Mexico threaten to devolve into scandal. Left-wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who came in second, called the vote fraudulent and refused to recognize its results. Six years ago, Mr. Obrador also finished second in the presidential race. Then he led his supporters into the streets of the capital and paralyzed life in Mexico City for more than a month.

“We cannot recognize fraudulent election results,” said Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a representative of the Party of Democratic Revolution. “Within the necessary procedures, we will present evidence (of violations. - Kommersant ), there is a lot of evidence that Article 41 of the Constitution was violated , which establishes that elections must be fair.”

According to the Mexican Election Commission, the candidate from the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Enrique Peña Nieto, won the presidential elections held on Sunday. After processing almost 99% of the ballots, he received 38.15% of the votes. Andrés Manuel López Obrador trails him at 6.5%. “We voted for Enrique Pena Nieto, which means support for corruption, I have not the slightest doubt what such a vote means, and we will challenge it,” Mr. Obrador assured. According to him, violations were observed both during the election campaign and during the voting itself and the counting of ballots.

To back up his demands, Mr Obrador has threatened to bring hundreds of thousands of supporters onto the streets of Mexico City. He has experience in organizing such events. In 2006, he also came second in the presidential elections, losing only 1% to the incumbent head of state, Felipe Calderon. He considered the results falsified and staged street protests in Mexico City. As a result, life in this metropolis was paralyzed for more than a month.

It is noteworthy that, fearing a repetition of those events, on the eve of the vote the candidates signed a Goodwill Pact, according to which they pledged to recognize the election results and promised not to use dishonest technologies, in particular bribery of voters. Apparently, the document will remain on paper. Thus, the youth student movement #Yosoy132 did not wait for the go-ahead from Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. They have already staged a 25,000-strong march through the streets of the Mexican capital under the slogans “Mexico without the PRI!” and “Down with fraudulent elections!”
