On June 26, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously adopted the “ Magnitsky Act ,” according to which visa and financial restrictions could be introduced against a number of Russian officials.
The Russian authorities immediately promised an adequate response, but, apparently, in the United States there were no American citizens who were killed in prisons during the so-called investigation (like Sergei Magnitsky), and the circumstances were not properly investigated. In addition, it is difficult to imagine that after participating in the torture of prisoners, these same citizens would be eager to hide in Russia and keep a bank account there. Therefore, they decided to take revenge on those who are closer and have their own opinions, publicly criticize the actions of the authorities, and those about whom people know little from pro-Kremlin mouthpieces.
That's right, they decided to “literally” brand non-profit organizations with the label of foreign agents, i.e. spies. The Nazis forced Jews to make stars of David and wear them in the occupied territory, and our United Russia members decided immediately, without ceremony, with violations of the procedure for passing laws, to quickly concoct something similar to a law with such vague definitions of political activity so that police officers, investigators, prosecutors, judges could fabricate politically motivated cases without any tension.
Thus, political activity will be recognized as participation in actions in order to influence government bodies and change their policies. At the beginning of the 2000s, in the Krasnodar Territory, the court recognized recommendations for the protection of human rights as interference in the activities of government bodies, the public organization was closed, and the Supreme Court rubber-stamped this decision. Now the “advanced” Kuban experience will be in demand by the Kremlin, really, and why should they be ashamed now?
There was a wave among the public for preventing such “legislation”, but the authorities have so lost touch with reality that it is difficult to imagine them abandoning their idea.
As Vedomosti reports : “Up to 1,000 organizations will fall under the new law on the status of foreign agents for NGOs financed from abroad, including the Golos association and Transparency International <...> In total, there are about 230 in Russia 000 NGOs, of which several tens of thousands receive foreign funding, and most of them are not involved in politics. The Kremlin emphasized that it will be up to the court to determine whether a given non-profit organization is involved in politics or not.”
Apparently, the time has come to create the “Spies for the Constitution of the Russian Federation” movement. Well, I'm ready to join. There will be another column at the protests, can you imagine, a column of foreign agents...
