In Romania, a referendum on the early termination of powers of the President of the country Trajan Basesku was invalid - the turnout did not reach the necessary 50 percent. According to the election commission, a little more than 46 percent of people who have the right to vote took a little more than 46 percent of the vote. The referendum was called by the party to Basescu, which thus achieved its goal.
Trajan Basescu himself said:
- Voters with their voting - although it was not in my favor - showed that they were behind Romania. Few came to the referendum, but everyone acted according to conscience. Most did not vote. That is how they expressed their will and supported the idea that the country could not be controlled only at someone else's whim, without any rules, cannot be a society in which a group of politicians decides the fate of all.
At the same time, more than 87 percent of people who took part in the referendum spoke out for impeachment to Basescu. The country's Prime Minister
Viktor Pontus , the leader of the Social Liberal Union that has recently come to power, opposing the president of the country-said:
- Voters expressed the will of the vast majority of citizens in the referendum. I want to thank them on behalf of the ruling socio-liberal union. The referendum is won. Never before the political action received so much broad support. More than eight million Romanians participated in the vote.
In November 2012, parliamentary elections await Romania, and, as many observers expect, the political confrontation will continue. However, on July 30, Trajan Basescu called his political opponents to overcome the split in society. Victor Pontus, in turn, in an interview with Western media stated that he was not striving for confrontation with Basescu, the France Press agency reports. According to him, everyone will lose from this. Pontus expressed the hope that Basescu would not slow down the reforms, and emphasized that he did not intend to intervene in what is a presidential prerogative, and also said: "Two are needed for tango."
Earlier, the European Union and the United States expressed concern about the actions of Romanian politicians, in particular, the current government, which, in their opinion, threatened democracy in the country.
The political crisis complicates the negotiations that Romania leads with the International Monetary Fund to receive assistance necessary to overcome the economic crisis - the IMF delegation should arrive in the country in the near future.
Bucharest journalist
Anna Dinutz notes:
- The government over the past two weeks has made several proposals to reduce VAT. It is about reducing it to the main food, which is very significant for the Romanians. In addition, last week, Baseska stated that it was necessary to reduce the number of hospital beds in Romania - from 130 thousand to 100 thousand. Over the past three years, those governments that have been in power under the direct leadership of Basesk took hard steps - were reduced by 25% wages, pensions were cut.
- The reason for the fall in the popularity of Basescu, at least, was partly in the fact that he took tough saving measures? - Yes, that is how. Cutting various social payments. Cutting benefits. The benefits of mothers were cut off, pensions were reduced to military personnel. All this catalyzed the indignation of the people, demonstrations and rallies, which passed the whole last year and intensified in the winter. Previous governments immediately agreed to the requirements of the IMF. But it all depends on how to apply the received funds. Large amounts of funds from the IMF were spent for other purposes.
