Barnes & Noble has reduced the price of its devices from $20 to $50

The largest American bookselling company Barnes & Noble on Sunday reduced the price of all three models of its readers and Nook tablets.

The price for a tablet with 16 GB of memory has decreased from $249 to $199, with 8 GB - from $199 to $179. The price of the Nook Color reader has also decreased - from $169 to $149. The reduction in prices for Nook devices did not come as a surprise to experts, who primarily associate it with the approaching start of the school year. This is when sales of such devices are likely to increase, and Barnes & Noble obviously wants its Nook to compete successfully with other similar devices. The Nook's main competitor is Amazon's line of Kindle tablets and readers, which start at $199.

In addition, Amazon is Barnes & Noble's main competitor in the e-book market. Amazon remains the leader in this market, accounting for 60% of sales of e-books and e-readers. Barnes & Noble is in second place with 27%. An increase in the number of tablets and readers sold will automatically lead to an increase in sales of e-books, experts say.

The production of Nook readers began in 2009. The first Nook tablet was released in November 2011. According to expert Sarah Epps from Forrester Research, in the fight against competitors, the company is forced to constantly upgrade its devices, create new ones and reduce the price of old ones.

However, the David-Goliath price war is not working in David's favor yet - Barnes & Noble. As sales volumes increase, income decreases. Nook revenue fell 10.5% in the fourth quarter of its 2011-12 fiscal year, which ended in April, according to Barnes & Noble.

However, this does not bother the company. Already this month, following the example of Amazon, Barnes & Noble may announce the start of sales of e-books and gadgets outside the United States.
