The Gagarinsky Court of Moscow sentenced Adam Tuganov to six years in prison for participation in the 2009 kidnapping of the son of former Rosneft vice-president Mikhail Stavsky , told RAPSI court spokeswoman Marina Novozhilova on Wednesday .

“Tuganov was found guilty of committing a crime, the court sentenced him to six years in prison in a maximum security colony , as well as restriction of freedom for two years after his release,” the spokeswoman said.

During the trial, the defendant maintained that he was innocent. He has the legal right to appeal the verdict to a higher authority within ten days.

According to investigators, natives of Chechnya Zarema Dataeva, Mikhail Gorchkhanov and Adam Tuganov, as part of an organized group, kidnapped a 17-year-old student of the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas near the university building in April 2009. The victim was held hostage for two months, after which he was released near the village of Sofino, Naro-Fominsk district.

In August 2010, the Gagarinsky court sentenced Gorchkhanov and Dataeva to 14 and six years in prison, respectively.

According to the court press secretary, at the time of the indictment of the other defendants in the case, Tuganov was serving a sentence for committing another crime, so he was charged in this case immediately after he was released from the colony.

Tuganov was charged with “kidnapping,” which carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.

According to the investigation, Andrei Karpov and Vitaly Chernobrovkin, who were killed during the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus, also took part in the kidnapping. The case of another detained defendant, Alexander Yashin, has been separated into separate proceedings.
