Syria: no way out

What is happening now in Syria is extremely easy to describe – there is a full-fledged civil war going on there. The number of victims varies from 12 to 16 thousand, and more than 230 thousand are refugees. (The population of the country for reference is 20.2 million as of 2009).

And what has Russia done towards Syria during all this time? Starting from December 5, 2011, she began to block and oppose resolutions on Syria in all international organizations. Along with diplomatic measures, our weapons began to fall into the camp of Assad’s supporters.

That's the whole background.

The bottom line is exactly this – the number of victims and the inaction of the world community due to the fault of some individual states. Supplying weapons to one side is an absolute meanness, this is a baseness for which it would be nice to answer, but not in our conditions and that’s not what we’re talking about.

Let's just think (and not judge one or the other): is there a way out of this situation?

How can the international community actually cease fire? The introduction of troops, obviously, is by no means an end to the war (yes, Dmitry Anatolyevich, forcing peace is the same war, but with a bright goal). Support one of the parties, and call on the other to immediately surrender? But this cannot be the decision of all countries, because they are different countries because they have different interests in Syria. Don’t ask what interests we have there. I'm afraid that they are purely propaganda.

That is, we need to put some pressure on both sides of the conflict. How? Is this possible?..

And while we silently watch, with or without tears in our eyes, how people die there. In many ways, it is not the fault of our government. But the thought “What if?..” torments me.

There are moments when our society is powerless. This means something needs to change. In a global, universal sense. Because we are observers.

And civilians are prisoners. Captives of a situation from which there is no way out.
