Suspects of church arson detained in Baltiysk
Officers of the Internal Affairs Directorate for the Kaliningrad Region detained two residents of Baltiysk who set fire to and desecrated an Orthodox church, the press service of the regional Internal Affairs Directorate reported on Monday.
A report of a fire in the building of the St. George Naval Cathedral of the Baltic Fleet, located in Baltiysk, was received by the police last night. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to the entire temple. Only part of the door was burned.
At the scene of the incident, police found various offensive inscriptions painted in black paint on the wall of the Cathedral. Within a few hours, the police established that the temple was set on fire and desecrated by two local residents born in 1991 and 1996. The suspects were detained at their place of residence.
Both detainees are in police custody; they confessed to their crime and indicated the place where the cans of aerosol paint were hidden. The issue of initiating a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “vandalism” is being resolved.
