I am writing to you an urgent message from the Prirazlomnaya platform, on which I am with five activists Greenpeace International. This morning, we climbed onto it in order to demand from oil producing companies planning to master the Arctic shelf to abandon their intentions.
The amount of oil, which is spilled annually in Russia as a result of accidents on oil pipelines, is comparable to the amount that the Pri con Pereslomnaya platform plans to extract during the year. Now, first of all, you need to reduce the number of accidents on pipelines. This is much more profitable than proceeding with the oil and gas development of the Arctic shelf. It is more profitable for the Russian government, for oil companies and indigenous peoples, which most suffer from oil spills.
We had a full moral right to go to this action, since oil giants are already in the Arctic. They are going to drill her shelf, while not a single company knows how to effectively eliminate oil spills in the ice. And the company "Gazprom Neft Shelf" is no exception. In the case of spill, the disaster will be inevitable. The Greenpeace of Russia found out that the validity of the liquidation plan for emergency spills adopted in 2007, the operator “Prirazlomnaya” expired in July 2012, and the “adjusted (revised) plan”, as the Ministry of Emergency Situations says , was “not presented” to the ministry.
More recently, I came to Moscow, and for the 3 days that I spent in Russia, I really liked people. I saw that you are concerned about environmental crimes, problems of freedom of speech, corruption. At the same time, the authorities are trying to limit one of the basic rights of citizens - the free expression of their thoughts. As you can see, it affected me. I took part in the action because I want to express the opinion of millions of inhabitants of the planet: "Arctic is not a place for oil production." We want us to be heard. And if for this we need to hold stocks - we will do this.
While in Moscow, I met with the Minister of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, with journalists and civil activists, talked with representatives of indigenous peoples - we are united by one desire: to preserve the Arctic, a fragile region, which is now in danger. We presented the data of Russian scientists who examined 60 thousand scenarios of a possible spill on a drilling platform, and realized that the company could not effectively cope with pollution. Moreover: rescue services will be able to get to the place of the alleged accident only in a couple of days, while oil will reach the shores much faster-in just 20 hours.
