Photo: ITAR-TASSDmitry Medvedev, in a speech in front of the Penza branch of the United Russia party, unexpectedly expressed his attitude to the sentence in the Pussy Riot case:

“The imprisonment is a very strict, terrible responsibility. And what happened, that the famous group of girls has already been in prison for a long time, in itself, regardless of the sentence, is a very serious punishment for all of them perfect, regardless of what position we are in. In itself, I emphasize, I emphasize - this is a punishment. And very strict. This is the first.
The second: if we talk about the content of the misconduct, I would not want to replace the judge, but, from my point of view, that punishment that they have already suffered, the content of the prison for a rather significant period of time is quite enough for them to think about what happened in their life for their stupidity or for some other reasons. Therefore, the prolongation of this one here, the extension of the content in a prison in relation to this occasion seems to me unproductive. Here, in my opinion, it was quite a conditioned punishment, taking into account the time that they had already been conducted in conditions of extreme constraint, in conditions of prison.
Well, and the third, if we talk about the emotional side, I did not talk about this subject, but I will say. Frankly, you excuse me, I may not express myself in a completely parliamentary way, but I will say: I feel sick from what they did, and from their appearance, and from the hysteria that accompanies what happened. It’s just disgusting to talk about it. This is my personal attitude. "

The Russian Orthodox Church asked not to punish strictly Pussy Riot. Medvedev and Putin believe that it is not worthwhile to strictly judge. But we have an independent court.
