The Khorinsky District Court of Buryatia will consider a claim to recover damages of 155.5 million rubles from local resident Andrei Andreev, who caused a major forest fire in the spring of this year, the press service of the republican prosecutor's office reported on Thursday.
According to the department, on May 16, A. Andreev, in violation of fire safety rules, used matches to set fire to dry grass in the village of Mogoi, Khorinsky district, after which, due to the wind, the fire spread into the forest.
“As a result of the forest fire that occurred due to the fault of A. Andreev, 2 thousand 270 cubic meters of forest plantations were destroyed and damaged by fire. The total amount of damage caused to the state forest fund amounted to 155 million 547 thousand rubles,” the message says.
The court found A. Andreev guilty under Part 2 of Article 261 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Destruction or damage to forest plantations as a result of careless handling of fire, causing major damage”) and sentenced him to a year of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period of six months. Currently, the district prosecutor has sent a statement of claim to the Khorinsky District Court to recover from the convicted person the amount of damage he caused.
