Insanity is getting stronger

There is no other way to describe what has been happening in Russia in recent months.

I'll start with Pussy Riot. Members of this punk band held a punk prayer service in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Marasmus? Undoubtedly. And generally an abomination. What Patriarch Kirill could say to the whole country, adding something like: "Let them go in peace and live in their shame." And it's over. But no, they were arrested and then kept for months in a pre-trial detention center, thereby, as the peace officers claimed, protecting them from the righteous wrath of believers. Marasmus? Undoubtedly. Then they were judged for a long and tedious time, showing the world in a cage and in handcuffs, like real gangsters. Marasmus? And how, moreover, nauseating. Finally, they were sentenced to two years. Marasmus? Undoubtedly.

But it doesn't end there. The liberal and revolutionary Russian public awards the punk band with the "Made in Russia" award in the "Best Art Project of the Year" nomination. Punk prayer in the XXC is the best art project of the year in Russia? And this is not insanity? Further: Yoko Ono awards them the Lennon-Ono Prize (there is reason to believe that John was spinning in his grave when the winners were announced). A group of European Parliament deputies nominated the girls for the Andrey Sakharov Prize: if we remember that Nelson Mandela and our Memorial, for example, received this prize in previous years, then the desire to run around the corner and give back what they just ate becomes almost irresistible. In response, the authorized representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, Konstantin Dolgov, publicly stated that the initiative of the deputies of the European Parliament “cannot be regarded otherwise than as a gross attempt to interfere in the activities of the independent branch of Russian power and the desire to question the decision of the court that issued its verdict in the manner prescribed by law." Marasmus? I would say insanity squared.

Meanwhile, completely different deputies, namely the State Duma of the Russian Federation, showed that they were not born with a bast. In the legislative rage they produced several masterpieces. First, they decided to "tweak" the treason law in such a way that it could be used against anyone at any time. If we add to this the law that any NGO that receives funding from abroad is required to register as a "foreign agent" and add to the closure of the USAID office, then it is impossible to get rid of the feeling of insanity dictated by paranoia.

Secondly, apparently, a special law will be adopted, according to which insulting the feelings of believers will be a criminal offense. The main argument in favor of the adoption of such a law is the riots in connection with the film "Innocence of Muslims". It always seemed to me that the law should protect everyone from insult, both believers and non-believers in God (I write with a lowercase letter, because I am an atheist; however, this may offend the religious feelings of one or another believer; what to do?), for which and there is a corresponding article on hooliganism. So why do we need a special article protecting the feelings of believers?

The other day, RIA Novosti showed George Clooney's famous film Good Night and Good Luck: McCarthyism was discussed. One of those present asked the question: "How could McCarthyism be born and develop in such a democratic country?" It was a little funny to me, because this is the question that Clooney answered with his film. Namely: if there are demagogues in the legislative and executive branches, who make their career out of the fear of those around them, anything can be achieved. Hitler achieved this in Germany, Stalin in the USSR, McCarthy in the USA. True, the success of the latter lasted only four years. But America is indeed a democratic country, and I think that's why it was able to break out of the insanity of McCarthyism relatively quickly and with minimal losses. And what will happen in Russia? Careerists and demagogues are in power a dime a dozen. And they start to get scared. And it becomes somehow very uncomfortable.
