The criminal case against the Chechen lawyer Dagir Khasavov, who previously supported the idea of creating a system of Sharia courts in Russia, has been discontinued. No crime was found in the lawyer’s actions, lawyer Sergei Belyak, who has the relevant resolution at his disposal, said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

Previously, D. Khasavov was suspected of committing a crime under Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity). A request demanding that a criminal case be initiated against the lawyer was received by the Prosecutor General's Office.

Employees of the supervisory agency became interested in the lawyer’s activities after April 2012. D. Khasavov made an ambiguous statement in an interview with REN-TV. A Chechen lawyer said that it is necessary to introduce a system of Sharia courts in Russia, otherwise Moscow will be flooded with blood and the city will turn into a dead lake. He stated that those who profess Islam do not want to come into contact with the complex judicial system of the Russian Federation, which is alien to them.

The prosecutor's office considered the lawyer's statements extremist. Soon D. Khasavov left Russia, and his son, the famous writer Arslan Khasavov, reported that family members began to receive threats from unknown persons.

D. Khasavov’s statement was criticized by the Supreme Mufti of Russia Talgat Tadzhuddin and the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov. In turn, the head of the Synodal Department for Relations between the Church and Society, Vsevolod Chaplin, admitted the possibility of legalizing Sharia courts in the country.

Later, D. Khasavov stated that his words were taken out of context, and the editing of the video distorted the meaning of what was said.

In June 2012 D. Khasavov’s statements became the reason for the investigation of the qualification commission of the Moscow Bar Association. Colleagues did not deprive D. Khasavov of his lawyer status and stopped the disciplinary proceedings.
