A just-released comprehensive report from the Council of Canadian Academies notes healthy growth in both scientific productivity and the global impact of Canadian science. Making up just 0.5% of the world's population, Canada currently produces 4.1% of the world's published scientific articles and nearly 5% of the most cited articles. It is significant, however, that the two areas of research traditionally identified as the strongest in Canadian science—natural resources and environmental protection—have not experienced as much growth as Canadian science as a whole in the 6 years since the previous similar report. It is also noted that, despite impressive scientific productivity in terms of journal publications, Canada annually accounts for only 1.7% of the total number of patent applications in the world.
