One of the Siberian Cranes, in the rescue operation of which Russian President Vladimir Putin took part , almost died in Kazakhstan, Interfax reports, citing the president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Six Siberian Cranes, with whom Vladimir Putin flew on a trike as part of the Flight of Hope project to accustom the birds to long flights, were placed with a flock of gray cranes in the Belozersky Federal Nature Reserve. However, due to the fact that the birds did not have time to get used to it, only one Siberian Crane was able to fly for the winter with the gray cranes. Ornithologists took the remaining five birds back to the reserve near Ryazan .
However, Peskov said, one Siberian Crane failed to successfully complete its mission. Having flown about 500 kilometers, the gray cranes made a stop on the territory of Kazakhstan. Here they were attacked by wild dogs. The cranes, accustomed to life in the wild, sensing danger, flew away, and the Siberian Crane, raised in captivity, almost became a victim.
People captured the bird and sheltered it at home. “The chairman of the Forestry Committee of Kazakhstan learned about this case, and he intuitively understood what kind of crane we were talking about,” Peskov said.
Through the joint efforts of the authorities of Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the crane will be returned to the rest of the flock, and then transported for the winter to a reserve on the Kazakh-Uzbek border.
