A stunning statement was made a couple of days ago by one of the most recognizable persons among the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, Abbot Sergius Rybko, rector of the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit at the Lazarevskoye Cemetery and a fairly frequent guest on various television shows.
I understand the indignation of the Russian people. The Holy Scripture commands that all these gay guys be stoned. Until this trash is removed from Russian soil, I fully share the views of those who are trying to cleanse our Motherland of it. If the state does not do this, the people will do it.
The Orthodox faith, culture, civilization are incompatible with this filth. Either we will become a tolerant Western state, where everything will be permitted, and lose our Christianity and moral principles, or we will be a Christian people who will live in “our God-protected country in all piety and purity.”
Unfortunately, as a priest, I cannot take part in such actions.
Unfortunately, it is not known for certain what kind of spirit descended on the brave champion of the defense of the Russian Land, otherwise emergency psychiatric help would not have been long in coming, because it is not normal when, instead of reading, a person hears some kind of call, an incentive to action. However, all this may turn out to be the tricks of the evil one - what the hell is not joking with?
There is nothing new in the abbot’s words, and we regularly hear similar sayings that lack originality: either some defender of the rights of embryos from the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly will give a voice, or a fighter against atmospheric phenomena from the People’s Council will make his presence known. This won’t surprise anyone, and what would be much more shocking would be, say, the angry tirades of the same hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church in defense of the victims in the gay club, which Rybko spoke out against.
Something completely different is important. Once again, a certain clergyman expresses his personal opinion, clearly drawing on Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (the same Kuraev with a call to report a bomb allegedly planted at Madonna’s concert), and again gets away with it, like a goose. Well, or a fish, as in this case.
Moreover, the views reflected in Rybko’s speech are as far from Christianity as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior from heaven.
I remember that Jesus himself saved the harlot Mary Magdalene from stoning, saying that let him who is not without sin throw a stone at him. Two thousand years ago no one dared. But I would not be surprised if in our time today’s Orthodox Christians (or citizens who consider themselves such) would beat him to death with sticks, stones and feet. For tolerance. And for the moral principle.
Long ago, in addition to obscurantism, the Church, unfortunately, also patented double standards. And now he successfully uses his inventions, somewhere making them his prerogative, and somewhere generously selling the rights to implement the Middle Ages on a state scale.
It’s not difficult to track this down: just remember the beloved story of believers about Sodom and Gomorrah, which allegedly perished due to the population’s addiction to same-sex love. The only righteous man who escaped was Lot and his daughters, who did not grieve for long and immediately embarked on the pious delights of incest, giving birth to as many as two tribes. A stunning example of high morality and traditional values, don’t you think?
The Russian church as an institution was initially immoral, ungodly and immoral. Because from its very inception to the present day, the church has been a collaborator, or, more simply, a traitor, an apostate and a traitor to its people. And she always supported those who were stronger, those who could provide her with privileges and give her the necessary protection and power in exchange for support.
Therefore, in fact, there is no difference between Patriarch Kirill’s calls to vote for Putin or the slander of the then Vladimir metropolitans to submit to the Horde khans and stop resistance. And, judging by the voice of the Russian Orthodox Church, enemies had to be sought in the “alien West” in various guises, be they Teutons or State Department spies, and not among their own princes and hierarchs who had sold themselves to invaders and dictators. Despite its centuries-old age, this propaganda broadcasts regularly, otherwise Alexander Nevsky would not have become the name of Russia.
Could the church improve? Of course, she had all the conditions to do this. But time after time she refused this opportunity, preferring her own benefit and well-being to the words written in the Bible. History repeats itself turn after turn, and remaining as a faithful watchdog of the Horde, ready to bite its compatriots for a bone, the Russian Orthodox Church in the same capacity faithfully served both Ivan the Terrible, who drowned the country in blood, and Stalin, who rotted millions of lives in the camps. It still serves today, trying to fill the empty ideological vacuum with an absurd mixture of the medieval obscurantist canons of the Trullo Council and the stability (stagnation?) and prosperity promised by the authorities. And, without a doubt, it will adapt to any future strongman of this world who will rule Russia, remembering the pompous and cobwebbed words about the symphony of Church and State, which is not a symphony at all, but rather a cacophony, such a funeral march of the Russian people, on the remains of which Religious and secular rulers dance merrily, consuming the blood and body of Christ in slaughter quantities.
By the way, about the latter: you don’t have to look far for examples of normal interaction between the state and the church. Just look at quite orthodox Greece, the history of Orthodoxy in which is almost a thousand years older than Russia’s, where respectable Greek police, without further ado, dispersed thugs similar to our “People’s Council” with tear gas and arrested them. And even though dissatisfied religious fundamentalists, like the Greek Synod, were categorically against the blasphemous from their point of view theatrical production “The Body of Christ,” where Jesus blesses a couple of apostles for a same-sex marriage, and Judas suffers from unrequited love for his teacher and, out of jealousy, sells him for thirty pieces of silver, this did not stop the law enforcement agencies from sending the fanatics to jail, and the Ministry of Culture from upholding the permission to stage the scandalous play by Terence McNally. Because in normal countries the law is higher than the decisions of medieval councils.
If you don't like the show, don't watch it. Half-naked bodies flashing on TV channels in prime time are embarrassing - give up the blue screen (propaganda of homosexuality?) and all the benefits of civilization, inspired by the example of asceticism of Sergius of Radonezh. The libels of those who do not like religion offend your feelings as a believer, do not read them. And you will have peace, quiet and grace.
In our country, an Orthodox activist is almost a superhero, an elusive executor of Christ’s commandments. He can, with impunity, beat girls who stand up for Pussy Riot, and destroy gay clubs (masks add a resemblance to superheroes), and threaten Gelman with Orthodox jihad for an exhibition at Winzavod. One gets the feeling that all of them, poor things, lacked parental attention and attention in their teenage years, so childhood still plays in one place. Cossack robbers. With fake checkers and medals made from tin cans.
The church itself can exclusively prohibit and be indignant, so much so that interdicts will soon be printed on an industrial scale. And she herself is slowly making her way into power, extending her slippery tentacles into schools and kindergartens, wrapping them around the thresholds of courts and theaters. At the same time, telling us about non-covetousness when the patriarch wears a watch worth thirty thousand euros. Recalling the sinfulness of theft, when she herself takes away an apartment from a sick person and her own servant. Teaching meekness and humility, while another priest on a black gelding knocks down an innocent man. In the end, declaring the devilish nature of all kinds of “healers”, simply monopolizing the right to trade in miracles in the form of candles and images.
Isn't it time to declare an auto-da-fé for her?
