Recently, the US government has increasingly controlled the content of Internet communications. This is stated in the report “On the situation with ensuring human rights in the United States,” which was published by the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 23.

The department said that censorship in the American segment of the Internet is carried out both through legislation and through pressure on companies “that are responsible for web content.”

An example of the first method is the Children Internet Protection Act of 2000 , which, in exchange for subsidies for Internet access, requires schools and libraries to create filters to block certain pages. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assures, the US government, under threat of prosecution, is “pushing” companies to remove “undesirable” information from web pages.”

The report also mentions the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, which is being considered in Congress, which, according to the authors, would give the government virtually unlimited ability to monitor the Internet activity of individuals.

Americans who express views on the Internet that do not coincide with traditional ideological guidelines risk being ostracized and even losing their jobs, the Foreign Ministry summarized. In addition, the ministry said that the United States is actively using the Internet for the purposes of a “propaganda war.”

The report was read out in the State Duma on October 22 during a hearing on “problems with respect for human rights in the United States of America.” It was noted that the hearings were timed to coincide with the presidential elections, which will be held in the United States on November 6.

Meanwhile, on November 1, Federal Law No. 139 comes into force in Russia, according to which a register of sites with prohibited information will be created in the country. A number of representatives of large Internet companies stated that the bill was developed without discussion with the industry and that it could become a prerequisite for the introduction of censorship in the RuNet. Meanwhile, according to one recent survey, almost two-thirds of Russians support the introduction of censorship on the Internet.
