A man suspected of murdering the US Ambassador to Libya in September of this year was killed in Cairo. Egyptian authorities announced this on Thursday.

According to the official version, early on Wednesday morning, Egyptian police and intelligence officers besieged an apartment in one of the buildings in Cairo, in which there was a person suspected of participating in the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi. According to the country's authorities, his name is Hazem, the BBC reported on Thursday.

Surrounded in the building, Hazem threw a bomb at law enforcement officers, but it was unsuccessful - it bounced off and flew back into his apartment. A fire broke out and a shootout ensued that lasted for several hours.

At the same time, the residents of the house were evacuated.

When everything stopped and security officers burst into the apartment, they found a charred corpse, weapons and explosives.

US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens died on the night of September 12, 2012 in Benghazi, when the consulate general building where he was located was fired at from grenade launchers by a group of militants. In addition to the ambassador, three more American citizens were killed.

The militants who killed the ambassador, who had always ardently supported the revolution in Libya that overthrew Mawmmar Gaddafi, belonged to the Ansar al-Sharia group and attacked the American consulate in protest against the US-made film “The Innocence of Muslims.”
