Hurricane "Sandy" reached the United States

Sandy’s tropical hurricane fell on the east coast of the United States and Canada on Tuesday night. There are at least 16 people there, reports CNN. Earlier, the hurricane went through Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, taking the life of 65 people.

Five died in New York. Also among the dead are residents of the States of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, as well as a resident of the Canadian city of Toronto. Most often, the cause of the death of people is the fall of trees, road signs, advertising shields.

The power of the wind does not weaken and reaches 135 kilometers per hour. In New York, strong flooding was noted. The water level in one of the areas of the city rose by almost four meters. The tunnels of the metro turned out to be flooded.

In New York, Sandy led to a massive power outage. About 250 thousand houses were left without light. Electricity turned off in one of the largest hospitals in the city, hospital of the University of New York. The issue of evacuation of patients is being resolved. In total, more than 2.85 million people living in the territory of 11 states touched the power outages associated with Sandy.

In the cities of the Atlantic coast of the United States, classes in schools were canceled, all federal institutions stopped working. Public transport was stopped, including the metro, many roads and bridges were blocked. Tunnels connecting Manhattan with the mainland are closed. Thousands of flights were canceled, including international ones.
