The Vice Speaker of the State Duma Uneneros, Sergei Zheleznyak, demanded that the European Parliament deprive the possibility of entering the European Union of Texas Prosecutor Greg Ebbota, RIA Novosti reports.
On the eve of Ebbot threatened the mission to the OSCE observers by criminal prosecution if they approach polling stations closer than one hundred feet. In response to the OSCE statement regarding cases of fraud with identification certificates of voters in Texas, the prosecutor indicated that the OSCE opinion “legally does not matter” in the United States. Director of the Bureau for Democratic Institutes and Human Rights, OSCE, Yanez Lenarchich called these threats "unacceptable."
Zheleznyak as a deputy co-chairman of the Russian parliamentary cooperation committee, on Monday, appealed to the European Parliamentarians demanding that a legal and parliamentary assessment of the statement of the representative of the US authorities. He "wants to figure out how such statements by the representative of the American state correlate with European ideas about democratic values, honesty and transparency of elections, respect for the activities of international observers, the importance of public control over the voting process."
“In the letter, I urge them to apply the same requirements to this American official that they put forward to officials of other countries that improperly expressed about democracy and performing appropriate actions. I propose to enter the list of persons who are prohibited from entering the territory of the European Union,” Zheleznyak said.
"I will demand from European Parliamentarians that they take a fundamental position if they are champions of democracy not only in words, but also in practice," said Uneneros. If they do not make such a decision, then this will show that their claims to the democracy of Russia are biased and biased, Zheleznyak said.
On October 23, the European Parliament recommended that the EU council introduce visa and financial sanctions on the Magnitsky list. The corresponding resolution was adopted at a plenary session in Strasbourg. It is proposed to ban the entrance to the EU and freeze the banking assets of Russian officials involved in the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in the pre -trial detention center. The EU Council will be expected to consider this recommendation before the end of this year.
As Estonian deputy Christine Ouland, who presented the draft resolution, emphasized, the death of Magnitsky - is not an isolated case. The European Parliament advocates the introduction of similar lists in other cases of violation of human rights. The Euro-deputies consider the "List of Magnitsky" as a means of political pressure on the Russian authorities, the parliamentary press service notes. The purpose of the resolution is to fight the atmosphere of impunity, corruption and the use of the judicial system for political purposes.
The Permanent Representative of Russia under the EU Vladimir Chizhov stated that the adoption of the Magnitsky list will negatively affect the relations of Russia and the EU. At the same time, the ambassador expressed confidence that when making a decision by the European Union, "his prudence will prevail."
