New York authorities have canceled the parade, which was supposed to take place on the evening of October 31 in connection with the Halloween holiday. According to the official website of the event, the annual street procession will not take place for the first time in the last 39 years.

"We hope that no one planning to attend the parade was injured, and that those who can are helping at emergency centers nearby," the statement said.

The parade was canceled by the New York City Emergency Management Agency and Police Department two days after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast .

Between 50 and 60 thousand people participate in the New York parade each year, Fox News reports. Halloween celebrations take place annually on the night of October 31 to November 1, the eve of the Catholic day of All Saints. On this day, it is customary to dress in costumes of evil spirits and monsters, as well as celebrities, characters from fairy tales and comic books.

Hurricane Sandy arose over the Caribbean Sea, passed over the territories of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and on the evening of October 30 reached the east coast of the United States, where New York and New Jersey suffered the most from it. For security reasons, most government agencies, schools, and the stock exchange were closed in New York, city transport, including the subway, was suspended, hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated, and thousands of flights were canceled.

Despite the precautions taken, eighteen people died in the hurricane in New York. According to preliminary estimates, the damage will amount to more than twenty billion dollars. In total, 110 people died as a result of Sandy.
