Sports columnist for the Ryazan branch of Novaya Gazeta Yuri Matytsin discovered on Monday in the entrance of the house where he lives a coffin lid with his photograph.
“We regard this as a threat to the journalist,” the publication’s editor-in-chief Alexei Frolov told Interfax.
In his opinion, this incident is related to the professional activities of his colleague.
“We are guessing which of the heroes of Matytsin’s critical publications might have lost their nerve. We are ready to hand over the names of sports functionaries to law enforcement officers,” said the editor-in-chief.
He noted that in connection with the incident, a corresponding statement was sent to the police, which was accepted for consideration. Law enforcement officials took the coffin lid as evidence.
“This is not the first case of pressure on journalists of the Ryazan edition of Novaya Gazeta, even over the past year. We hope that all unbalanced enemies of freedom of speech will answer according to the law,” Frolov added.
