Communists from Volgograd decided to collect one hundred thousand signatures for renaming the city to Stalingrad, told Interfax State Duma deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Alevtina Aparina . She noted that the collection of signatures was timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad on February 2, 2013.

According to the "Caucasian Knot", on November 19, a rally of communists was held in Volgograd, at which they also collected signatures for renaming the city. Activists hope that the city will be renamed by February.

The organization "Trade Union of Citizens of Russia" is collecting signatures for renaming Volgograd in 50 cities of Russia. According to the "Caucasian Knot", on November 24, the collection will begin in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Voronezh, Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Kostroma and other cities.

According to the organization’s press service representative Daria Dedova, signatures are collected by activists who hold single pickets. She said that in St. Petersburg alone they had already managed to collect five thousand signatures.

Volgograd was called Stalingrad until 1961.

It is worth noting that in early November the Volgograd branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation decided to rename itself to the Stalingrad branch. Their initiative was supported by party leader Gennady Zyuganov .
