Berths for two Mistral helicopter carriers are being prepared in Vladivostok
The first two Mistral helicopter carriers will arrive at the Pacific Fleet, where their berths are being renovated, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Viktor Chirkov told reporters on Friday.
“The first two Mistrals will arrive at the Pacific Fleet. Spetsstroy is reconstructing the 33rd berth in Vladivostok. We checked that the quality of work there is good,” Chirkov said.
According to him, the Pacific Fleet is developing a program for basing Mistral helicopter carriers, and in Kamchatka - for new submarines.
The Mistral universal landing helicopter carriers are in service with the French Navy. On December 24, 2010, Russia and France announced an agreement to build two Mistral helicopter carriers at a French shipyard. Two more Mistrals will be built in Russia - at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. There they will make hull blocks (the stern parts of ships, which makes up 40% of the entire vessel), which will be sent to France, where the helicopter carriers will be fully assembled. The contract was signed in June 2011. The contract amount is 1.2 billion euros. It is planned that the first ship will be delivered to the Russian Federation in 2014, the second - in 2015.
