American experts from Kelley Blue Book have compiled a rating of cars from the 2013 model range that will lose the least in price on the secondary market. The top ten leaders were occupied by cars of the Japanese brands Honda, Toyota and subsidiary brands. Experts believe that in the Russian market, premium segment cars lose the most value.

Analysts from the American company Kelley Blue Book named new cars that lose the least value during resale. The estimates of American experts are based on forecasts of car sales on the secondary market.

Kelley Blue Book has published its aftermarket review every year since 1981, but the category-based awards were introduced in 2003. During the selection process, the company's experts identify 10 leaders in maintaining prices on the secondary market, and also divide the cars under consideration into 22 categories, in which winners are also selected.

In addition, the organization determines the best mass market brand and the best premium brand.

According to American experts, the average price on the secondary market for cars of the 2013 model year is 38.2% of the initial recommended price. For example, a car worth $50 thousand will cost $19.1 thousand in five years. Compared to 2012, this figure increased by 2.5%.

The top ten leaders in the ranking were predominantly crossovers and SUVs. The most profitable car in terms of sales on the secondary market, according to Kelley Blue Book, was the Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV. After three years, the cost of a car of this model will be 76%, and after five years - 63%.

Second place was taken by another popular Toyota model in the USA – the Tacoma pickup truck. After three years of operation, cars of this model will cost 70.3% of the initial price, and after five years - 57%.

The top three in terms of value retention is occupied by the Jeep Wrangler SUV - the only representative of the American automobile industry in the top ten winners. After three years of use, the Jeep will cost 67.6% of the original cost, and after five years this figure will drop to 55.4%.

Also included in the top ten leaders were (in descending order) Honda CR-V (64.7% of the initial price after three years; 50.7% after five years), Toyota 4-Runner (66.7% of the initial price after three years; 49% - after five years), Toyota Land Cruiser (62% - after three years; 49% - after five years), Porsche Cayenne (67% - after three years; 47.3% - after five years), Lexus LS (65% after three years; 47% after five years), Honda Civic (62.5% after three years; 46.9% after five years) and Scion tC (60% after three years, 46 .5% - in five years).

Toyota became the best mass brand for the second year in a row.

The organization's specialists noted that Toyota has traditionally been the main choice for buyers who are guided by practical considerations when buying a car. However, in recent years, the brand has begun to expand its influence on potential buyers through richer vehicle equipment and aggressive design of some models, while maintaining a high level of practicality and reliability.

Toyota's subsidiary Lexus won Best Luxury Brand for the third time.

The victory of Toyota and subsidiary Lexus in two possible categories made these brands the leaders in the entire Kelley Blue Book survey - together they took 5 places in the top 10, and also won in 10 categories in individual classes out of a possible 22.

Taking into account the second and third places occupied by Toyota cars in various categories, cars of these brands are present in 15 “class” nominations out of 22.

Speaking about the used car market as a whole, Kelley Blue Book experts emphasized that various options and special equipment packages do not always increase the value of a used car.

Experts added that there are exceptions, such as powerful engine modifications on sports cars, as well as all kinds of sports packages.

At the same time, experts spoke about the importance of the color and type of drive depending on the region where the machine is sold. For example, in cold regions of the United States, all-wheel drive cars are much more popular, while in warm parts of the United States, black or other dark-colored cars are rarely bought.

The head of the Trade-in department of the Avilon company, Mikhail Sysoev , told Gazeta.Ru that on the Russian market, cars in the premium segment lose the most value over time.

“Such cars include the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Volkswagen Phaeton,” the expert said. — They usually lose about 20% of their original value in one year. There may be more, it all depends on the configuration. This is due to the fact that buyers in this segment choose a car in terms of image and status. And not everyone wants to purchase a used car, which has already been equipped with various individual options tailored for the first owner. Therefore, the price has to be reduced significantly.”

“The same applies to coupe and convertible cars, which are also seasonal,” added Sysoev.

The smallest price reduction over time has been recorded among cars in the mass segment - they lose about 10-13% of the initial price per year, the expert said. “Moreover, the maximum reduction in cost occurs in the first two years of the car’s life. This primarily applies to the popular classes in our country - affordable sedans and crossovers. These include cars such as the Volkswagen Polo sedan, Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Focus, Hyundai ix35, Hyundai Solaris,” said Sysoev. “Due to the huge demand for these models in the new car market, we are able to maintain a high price level in the used car market. In the case of the Ford Focus II, a situation very typical for Russia developed, when many first buyers sold the car at almost the same price a few years later. This happened due to the fact that the manufacturer began to gradually increase the cost of new cars, and the model turned out to be truly loved by our citizens.”

“It is worth noting that now in the used car market the situation with prices can change very quickly and very dramatically. One of the reasons is that manufacturers and dealers are closing sales plans for new cars, launching huge sales with large discounts, and hence the used car market is creeping down. Risks increase, of course, primarily in the premium segment,” the expert added.
