“He left a suicide note. I preferred death to imprisonment, ”said the lawyer.

The officials were charged under Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“abuse of power”). According to the investigation, on August 4, 2004, Tatyana Naydenova signed an order “On the conditions for the privatization of FSUE Stankoimport,” although this was not within the scope of her powers. The list of assets to be privatized included assets worth €16.5 million attributed to 19 companies previously established abroad.

Securities of 19 companies were included in the authorized capital of OAO Stankoimport. According to investigators, the real value of the securities was more than 2.5 billion rubles, but formally they were valued at 897 million. According to the investigation, as a result of this operation, the Russian Federation lost 2.5 billion rubles. Last week, a jury found them guilty, and yesterday the prosecutor asked for 6 years in prison for Polyutov and 5 years in prison for Naydenova.

The trial was held behind closed doors: there are many documents classified as “secret” in the case. The Stankoimport enterprise was established in the 1930s and carried out the purchase of advanced technology abroad under the control of special services.
