Writer Vasily Belov on the sailing frigate "Friendship", 1994
In Vologda they said goodbye to the writer Vasily Belov. The author of "familiar business" and "Plotnitsky stories" died on December 4 at the 81st year of his life.
As often happens, the best work of Vasily Belov was the first, which became a famous general public: the story "The usual business". “I had several stories with one hero,” he said about the history of the creation of this thing. “I thought that they could be connected - it would be thicker.” The main character of this story, the collective farmer Ivan Africanovich, is the brightest, but also the most ordinary that was in the Russian village of the middle of the last century. Reading, you cry from tenderness and are not ashamed, because your tears are without snot. So you think about the man Maree, Captain Tushin and Cossack Eroshka, but, by the way, not about Maxim Maksimych, this very lonely person of Russian literature, because Ivan Africanovich was family, had a bunch of children, loved his wife - selflessly, but unaccountably, otherwise he would have come from work under the hops.
We met in the editorial office of the newspaper Pravda, it was immediately after the release of the "usual business". He had nowhere to spend the night, went to me in Ostankino. It was then, at dinner, he said that the “familiar business” was born out of the desire to do something thicker than the story. The next day, his wife was left by his wife, and Vasya said in an apologetic tone that he would go to spend the night to him. This friend was Shukshin. I was honestly happy with both. Whoever has Belov and not at Shukshin, and whom to see Shukshin after his wife’s departure, if not Belova!
He was in love with the Russian rural patriarchate, but turned out to be one-loving and painfully jealous: he looked at the Russian modernity with such burning hatred that if all of it had embodied in something artistic, and not just in his newspaper performances, it would be great, but hardly an interesting satire.
I heard about his death on the radio. A carefree female voice rammed: the "famous Russian writer" died.
