
Anirudh Surabhi, a student of the London Royal Arts College, created a cardboard bicycle helmet that protects his head better than an EPS inelastic polystyrene foam, which is usually used in the production of protective equipment.
The helmet, named its inventor Kranium, appeared as early as 2010, but only now the company Abus, which is going to release the serial version of Kranium in the spring of next year, was noteworthy to a promising idea, CNews reports science and development .
Testing in China, Great Britain and Germany showed that a cardboard helmet absorbs three times more energy than similar helmets from EPS, but it is more easily 15% and much cheaper.
Kranium withstands even multiple strokes, and a transparent cap not only protects cardboard from the influence of the external environment, but also makes it easy to evaluate the integrity of the internal cardboard grate. In the case of EPS, an invisible crack can seriously reduce the protective properties of the helmet, and the user will not even know about it.
The idea of creating a protective helmet of a new type of student designer brought an accident when he fell from a bicycle and spent several days in the hospital. As a result, Anirudha designed and built a new, safer bicycle helmet from cardboard.
Kranium is made of ordinary corrugated cardboard using laser cutting. Cardboard replaces the standard EPS foam. Despite the apparent absurdity of the idea, the experiments showed that a cardboard helmet absorbs the energy of the blow much better than the helmets of EPS foam.
Of course, this requires a special design: placing cardboard in a certain order, accurate gluing and a carefully fitted transparent plastic cap.
