The State Duma adopted the “anti-Magnitsky law”

The State Duma on Friday adopted in the third and final reading the so-called “anti-Magnitsky law” (or “Dima Yakovlev’s law”), which provides for a ban on the adoption of Russian children by US citizens and tightens requirements for “political” NGOs.

420 deputies voted in support of the law, seven voted against it, and one abstained.

The law “On measures of influence on persons involved in violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights and freedoms of citizens of the Russian Federation” was initiated by State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin and the leaders of all four parliamentary factions. Later the list of authors was significantly expanded.

The law banning the adoption of Russian children by American citizens was a response to the approval by the US Congress of the “Magnitsky list,” which imposes visa restrictions on individual Russian citizens who, according to Americans, are guilty of human rights violations in Russia.

Before the meeting on Friday, Novaya Gazeta journalists handed over more than 100 thousand signatures against the “anti-Magnitsky law” to the State Duma reception, but they will be considered only after the New Year .
