Background

In the 1993 parliamentary elections, out of 13 participants, 8 overcame the five percent barrier, including 2 blocs. The pro-Yeltsin bloc "Russia's Choice", which included the political movement of the same name, the Democratic Russia movement, the Peasant Party and the Democratic Initiative party, took second place with 15.51% of the votes. The Yavlinsky-Boldyrev-Lukin bloc (the future Yabloko party), consisting of the Republican Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Russian Christian Democratic Union - New Democracy party, was in sixth place with 7.86%.

According to the results of the 1995 elections, out of 43 campaign participants, 4 got into parliament. There were no blocs among them.

In 1999, of the six associations that entered the State Duma, four were electoral blocs: the Interregional Movement "Unity" (second place, 23.32%), "Fatherland - All Russia" (third place, 13.33%), Union of Right Forces (fourth place, 8.52%) and Zhirinovsky Bloc (fifth place, 5.98%). "Unity" was founded by seven electoral associations: the Russian Christian Democratic Party, the People's Patriotic Party, the movements "Refah" ("Prosperity"), "My Family", "In Support of Independent Deputies", "Generation of Freedom", as well as the political public organization "All-Russian Union for Support and Assistance to Small and Medium Businesses". The "Fatherland - All Russia" bloc included the organizations "Fatherland", "Regions of Russia" and "For Equality and Justice", the Agrarian Party and the Union of Christian Democrats party. The Union of Right Forces consisted of the Democratic Choice of Russia party, the New Force and Young Russia movements, as well as the political organization Lawyers for Human Rights and a Decent Life. The Zhirinovsky bloc was formed after the refusal to register the LDPR; formally it included the Party of Spiritual Revival of Russia and the Russian Union of Free Youth.

In 2003, voting blocs took part in parliamentary elections for the last time. Among the four associations that overcame the five percent barrier was the Rodina bloc (Party of Russian Regions, Socialist United Party and People's Will party). He came in fourth place with 9.02% of the votes.
