On Chukotka created the national park "Beringia"

The Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed order No. 3 dated 01/17/2013 on the creation of Beringia National Park on the Chukotka, WWF reports.

The new specially protected natural area in the eastern part of the Chukchi peninsula consists of 5 sections with a total area of ​​more than 18 thousand square meters. km, of which more than 3 thousand are in the sea water area.

The national park will allow you to preserve the unique landscapes of the Chukchi peninsula, thermal springs, monuments of archaeological and historical and cultural heritage, primarily the ancient cultures of the Eskimos and Chukchi.

“The Chukotka Peninsula is the center of the variety of Arctic flora, there are more than 1000 species and subspecies of plants. On the territory of the National Park, animals like a white bear, a snowster, a Pacific walrus live; Huge bird bazaars gather on the coasts, salmon spawns in the rivers, ”says Mikhail Styshov, coordinator of projects to maintain the biodiversity of the Arctic WWF of Russia.

The new national park will eventually become part of the first Russian-American protected natural territory. This trace border reserve will consist of Beringia on the Russian territory and Bering Land Bridge National Park in the United States.

They decided to organize the Soviet-American International Park in Chukotka and Alaska to preserve the unique natural-cultural complex of the USSR and the United States back in 1990. For more than 20 years, it took to turn political agreements into real decisions in order to take into account the most fully, on the one hand, the tasks of preserving the unique biological diversity of the region and the interests of the indigenous population, on the other, the socio-economic development of the region.

Now Russia and neighboring states already have 4 cross -border guarded territories. Each of them is controlled in accordance with the current national legislation, while joint programs for the study of natural processes are developed and implemented for reserves.
