The Japanese JGC Corporation, whose employees were taken hostage, stated that it does not know the fate of 17 of its employees: 10 Japanese and seven foreigners. British authorities said they did not know the fate of the seven people. According to British Prime Minister David Cameron, quoted by Reuters , three of them have already been declared dead.

Earlier, the Algerian authorities announced official data on the number of people killed as a result of the hostage-taking at the In Amenas field and the operation to free them. According to Algerian authorities, 23 hostages and 32 captors were killed. Among the dead were citizens of countries such as Great Britain, France, Romania and the United States. At the same time, the Algerian army managed to free 685 Algerian hostages and 107 foreigners.

The invaders were part of a group associated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist network. Militants seized the territory of the In Amenas gas field on January 16, having previously killed two workers: a Briton and an Algerian. On January 17, government troops began an assault on the facility, including using combat helicopters. The operation was completed on January 19.

The attack on the In Amenas field and the taking of hostages is considered a response by Islamists to the fact that Algeria is assisting France in a military operation in the West African Republic of Mali, whose authorities are fighting Islamist rebels.
