In the Kursk region, for the first time in six years, a case of human rabies has been registered, reports the press service of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor.
A 47-year-old resident of the Rylsky district was admitted to the medical facility last Sunday. Doctors diagnosed her with rabies. The next evening the woman died.
Experts suggest, in particular, that the woman could have been infected by her own cat 5 months ago, after which the animal disappeared.
It is noted that this year 3 cases of rabies among animals have already been registered in the Kursk region.
Last year in the Kursk region, rabies was laboratory confirmed in 55 animals in 21 administrative territories, including in the regional center, which is 1.5 times higher than the previous level. In 2012, 3,007 people applied to treatment and preventive institutions in the region, compared to 2,975 people in 2011.
186 people suffered from bites by wild animals in 2012, and 136 people in 2011.
Rabies is a viral disease that causes severe damage to the nervous system and ends in death. The source of infection is infected animals (foxes, wolves, dogs, cats, bats, rodents, horses, small and cattle). Infection of a person occurs when a bite or saliva of a sick animal gets on damaged skin or mucous membrane.
The virus is released into the external environment through the saliva of an infected animal. Transmission of the virus from person to person cannot be ruled out. The incubation period averages from 1 to 3 months.
