Mari El will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the republic in 2020
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree “On the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Republic of Mari El,” the Kremlin website reported on Monday.
“In connection with the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Republic of Mari El in 2020, I decide to accept the proposal of the government of the Russian Federation to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Republic of Mari El in 2020,” the text of the decree says.
Government bodies of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation and local governments are recommended to take part in the preparation and conduct of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the republic.
The decree comes into force from the date of its signing.
The Mari region was annexed to the Russian state in the middle of the 16th century.
Before the October Revolution, the Mari did not have their own statehood and were scattered within the Kazan, Vyatka, Nizhny Novgorod, Ufa and Yekaterinburg provinces. And today, out of 670 thousand Mari, only 324.3 thousand live in the Republic of Mari El. Historically, more than half of the Mari live outside their republic.
On November 4, 1920, by decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR, the Mari Autonomous Region was formed.
On December 5, 1936, in accordance with the Constitution of the USSR, the autonomous region was transformed into the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
