The Ministry of Defense leaves Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea
The inter-fleet group of the Russian Navy remains in the Mediterranean Sea for combat service, the Press Service and Information Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense told Interfax on Tuesday.
The agency's interlocutor said that following the results of the exercises held from January 19 to 29 in the Black and Mediterranean Seas, the leadership of the military department decided to extend the service of Russian ships in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to the source, the Black Sea Fleet patrol ship Smetlivy and several support vessels are currently in the Mediterranean. In the near future, the detachment will be joined by large landing ships (LHDK) of the Baltic Fleet "Kaliningrad" and "Alexander Shabalin", which have already left Novorossiysk. By the end of February, the Black Sea large landing craft "Saratov" and "Azov" will arrive in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that in the future the quantitative composition of the group, as well as the types of ships operating in the specified area, will be determined based on the developing situation.
