According to satellite monitoring in 2012, the Azov and Black Seas were one of the most polluted in Russia, the press service of the ITC “Scanes” reports.
During the monitoring, 92 radar surveys were carried out. In the 61th picture (66%), film pollution, mainly of ship origin, was found in the water. “This is one of the highest indicators of the degree of pollution among other seas of Russia,” the report said.
The area of pollution spots was from 0.1 to 60 square kilometers, while the largest pollution areas were observed in the Black Sea on the border of the Russian and Ukrainian sectors. In the Sea of Azov, the maximum spill area was 17.7 square kilometers.
The main source of film pollution in the open sea, according to researchers, is sea shipping. Most often, ship discharges were noted in the central part of the Black Sea in the context zone of the sectors of Ukraine, Russia and Turkey. Analysis of the materials of space survey and data of automatic identification systems allowed researchers to assume that this zone is constantly used to wash tanks and reset various liquid waste. Especially often this is done by the captains of universal tankers before changing the type of cargo, the message says.
