Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu seems to Russians to be a more successful candidate for the presidency than Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. As a survey conducted from February 15 to 18 among 1.6 thousand people showed, if the presidential elections were held next Sunday, 3.5% of Russians would vote for Sergei Shoigu, and 2% of Russians would vote for Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The absolute majority of respondents' votes - 32% - was given to the current President Vladimir Putin. 8% of respondents would vote for the head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov, 4% of respondents would each vote for the leader of the Civic Platform Mikhail Prokhorov and the leader of the LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and less than 2% of respondents would vote for the leader of A Just Russia Sergei Mironov. Another 23% of respondents would not participate in the elections, and 17% found it difficult to answer the question.

According to political strategist Evgeniy Suchkov, in terms of public policy, Sergei Shoigu is electable, and if sociologists had given the opportunity to vote for several candidates at once, he would have received a much higher percentage. Director of the Levada Center Lev Gudkov, in turn, believes that in the future Sergei Shoigu can be introduced into action as a conservative hard-line politician, but for now he is not considered as a political leader and is not able to compete with Vladimir Putin. “Citizens have no special sympathy for Sergei Shoigu as a political leader, but the All-Russian firefighter is really popular among the conservative part of Putin’s electorate,” said the sociologist. “These are elderly, poorly educated, poorly informed people, residents of the provinces.” At the same time, Lev Gudkov sees no reason why Vladimir Putin would not seek a new term.

Let us add that among the politicians whom Russians trust, first place in Levada Center polls also invariably went to Vladimir Putin. For a long time, the second most popular was Sergei Shoigu. Dmitry Medvedev began to appear on this list only after his transition at the end of 2005 from the presidential administration to the public post of first deputy prime minister in charge of national projects. But after Dmitry Medvedev left the Kremlin in May 2012 and took over the post of head of government, his rating has been gradually declining. But trust in Sergei Shoigu, after a slight decline during his work as head of the Moscow region (in May-November 2012, the rating remained at 10-11%), with his appointment to the post of head of the Ministry of Defense, increased again. In February, Minister Shoigu's rating was 16%, Dmitry Medvedev's - 19%, and Vladimir Putin's - 36%.
