Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the suppression of the activities of a criminal group that stole more than 50 million rubles from the salary cards of Sberbank customers in Nizhny Novgorod. Three people were detained on suspicion of a crime. It was established that both the former and current employees of the credit institution, as well as the heads of a number of commercial organizations, participated in the criminal scheme, the website of the Ministry reports.
The bank assures that most of the victims have already paid compensation. The victims themselves deny this. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers are blamed for the fact that they for a long time ignored the complaints of the victims of scammers.
According to law enforcement officers, the criminals used the following scheme: “Using relations in financial and credit institutions”, they received information about bank card holders, the availability and quantity of money in accounts, as well as passport data, after which they issued fake cards to their names, transferred customer money to them, and then cashed out illegal access to the Sberbank electronic payments system Online ". In this way, scammers managed to steal more than 50 million rubles.
During operational-search measures, three suspects were detained. A criminal case has been instituted against them under Part 3 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code (fraud). During the searches of their apartments and offices, more than 100 fake settlement plastic cards, more than 30 seals of various legal entities, documents of financial and economic activities of a number of commercial structures, over 20 cell phones were seized.
Law enforcement officers also established the organizer of the fraud - previously convicted resident of Nizhny Novgorod. However, according to Kommersant , he managed to hide.
The number of victims reached hundreds of people. In the Volga-Vyatka Bank of Sberbank of Russia, with the help of the security service of which these crimes were disclosed, they say that the overwhelming majority of the victims the bank has already compensated for the damage. However, one of the victims, whose abductors stole more than 130 thousand rubles, told reporters that neither the bank nor law enforcement officers called him and the issue of compensation has not yet been resolved.
In addition, the bankers themselves were unhappy that many of their customers who suffered from electronic thefts applied to the police, but they were refused criminal cases.
One similar fact was confirmed by the prosecutor's office of the Nizhny Novgorod region: for example, in the Sormovsky district, the investigators carried out refusal decisions four times in a row, not finding a crime in the theft of 36 thousand rubles from the Nizhny Novgorod bank card.
Note that the theft of money from bank cards is not uncommon. The number of fraud with ATMs is continuously growing. The most common methods of theft are skimming and phishing. In the fall of 2012, Sberbank reported that up to 75 cases of skimming attempts are recorded (reading information from the magnetic path of the bank card with equipment, which scammers are installed on ATMs in remote and poorly covered places) per week. Fishing is a type of fraud on the Internet, the purpose of which is to obtain user identification data.
In June 2012, the Investigative Committee reported theft of theft of 150 million rubles from customers of the North-Western Bank of Sberbank of Russia OJSC.
In November 2010, a suspect of more than two million rubles from the salary cards of Sberbank customers was detained in Togliatti.
In April 2011, more than 10 Sberbank customers were the victim of scammers who stole over 0.5 million rubles from their card accounts.
A similar case, by the way, occurred in 2009 with customers of the Bank of Moscow. Then the total amount of damage amounted to more than 1.2 million rubles. Moreover, the bank refused to compensate for the loss of customers.
In September 2011, in Moscow, scammers stole funds from the plastic cards of 2GIS employees who received a salary for VTB24 Bank cards. At the same time, thefts were carried out from two ATMs, one of which was in the VTB24 branch, and the second - next to the Taganskaya metro station.
Formally, the theft of money from the account is the problem of the bank that the client entrusted with their storage. But in Russia this rule does not work yet. In the most unenviable position, it is precisely the victims of scams using fake bank cards, the so -called white plastic. If the criminals managed to penetrate the remote banking service system, there are very few chances to prove the non -involvement of the client.
