Residents of Switzerland voted against the Winter Olympiad

Residents of the Swiss canton Graubunden at a referendum on Sunday spoke out against the Winter Olympic Games of 2022 in one of the cities of the region - St. Saint Moritz or Davos. Only the inhabitants of the Saint-Moritsa and Davos voted.

At the referendum, the residents of Canton were invited to answer the question whether they agree that 300 million Swiss francs ($ 320 million) from the financial reserve of Canton will be spent on organizing the Olympic Games. More than half of the voting (54%) skeptically reacted to such expenses, RIA Novosti informs.

Only the inhabitants of the Saint-Moritsa and Davos voted for, but this opinion has no weight without the approval of the idea by the majority of the population of the entire canton.

According to experts, the revenues from the games would be 1.5 billion Swiss francs. However, in the end, the point of view of the "green" prevailed, who said that the Olympiad would negatively affect the environmental situation in the region and irreparably spoil the landscape of the canton.

Cantonal government and parliament, business circles and representatives of the tourism sector who awaited the influx of investors and tourists advocated for submitting an application.

The position of local residents was not even affected by the opinion of the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge, who a week ago called Switzerland with its delightful mountain landscapes and the obvious favorite of the Olympic race. Prior to this, the country had already accepted games in 1928 and 1948 and both times they took place in St. Moritz, reminds ITAR-TASS.

The International Olympic Committee will determine the owner of the 2022 Olympic Games at a session in the capital of Malaysia Kuala Lumpur in 2015. Among the possible candidates are the German Munich, Norwegian Oslo, Spanish Barcelona, ​​Ukrainian Lviv and Polish Krakow.
