The memory of Soviet soldiers who died in the battles for Damansky Island was honored in Primorye
Memorial rallies dedicated to the 44th anniversary of the events on Damansky Island were held in the Primorsky Territory.
Rallies and ceremonies for paying military honors took place in the central square and the city cemetery of Dalnerechensk, where fallen soldiers are buried, as well as in the border service offices in the villages of Nizhnemikhailovskoye and Damanskoye, the press group of the Border Department of the FSB of the Russian Federation for the Primorsky Territory reported on Monday.
Commemorative events will continue on March 15. On this day, a memory escort will depart from Dalnerechensk after the requiem meeting. Its participants will visit the memorial to the border guard soldiers who died defending Damansky Island, as well as the border outposts named after Heroes of the Soviet Union Ivan Strelnikov and Democrat Leonov, who died defending Damansky.
Veterans who took part in the events and relatives of the heroes of the Soviet Union D. Leonov and I. Strelnikov will take part in the commemorative events.
On March 2, 1969, border guards of the Nizhnyaya Mikhailovka outpost under the command of Senior Lieutenant I. Strelnikov were attacked on the ice of the Ussuri River. The battle that began brought the neighboring outpost, Sopki Kulebyakina, to arms. On March 15, armed groups of Chinese again attacked our border guards. During the battles for Damansky Island, the total losses of the Soviet side were 58 killed and 94 wounded.
In 1978, the dead Russian soldiers, by decision of the command and the Council of Veterans of the unit, were reburied in the city cemetery of the city of Dalnerechensk.
In 1991, during the demarcation of the Soviet-Chinese border, Damansky (Zhenbao) was transferred to the PRC. The Chinese government, as a sign of memory of the events on Damansky, built a memorial island with a granite-fortified coastal part.
