Irina Yarovaya’s law on toughening penalties for drunk drivers was adopted in the first reading
The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill that toughens penalties for driving while intoxicated. The bill, in particular, provides for a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison for the death of a person in an accident due to the fault of a drunk driver.
The initiator of the draft law “On amendments to certain legislative acts of the Russian Federation on the issue of strengthening liability for committing offenses in the field of road safety” was the head of the parliamentary committee on security and anti-corruption Irina Yarovaya.
In accordance with the document, amendments are being made to the Code of the Russian Federation on Administrative Offenses, establishing a fine of 30 thousand rubles for a drunk driver. If the driver gives control of the car to a person who is intoxicated, the fine will be 10 thousand rubles. In both cases, the fine is applied with deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle for a period of one and a half to two years.
If similar offenses are committed repeatedly, the fine increases to 50 thousand rubles.
The punishment is also tougher if the driver is intoxicated and causes a fatal accident. For such a violation, the bill establishes a minimum penalty of imprisonment for a term of two to seven years. If two or more people died, the term of imprisonment increases from four to nine years.
