Tatenergosbyt (an electricity supplier in Tatarstan) has proposed that industrial enterprises in Kazan limit their electricity consumption during the Universiade, which will be held in Kazan from July 6 to 17, 2013.

The proposal was advisory in nature, assures Robert Yusupov, head of the Kazan branch of Tatenergosbyt: “Tatenergosbyt’s consumer enterprises have the right to decide for themselves whether to limit loads or not.”

According to Yusupov, the list of enterprises was determined in accordance with Appendix No. 1 to the minutes of the meeting of the operational headquarters for the coordination of uninterruptible power supply to the Universiade facilities, which took place on October 17, 2012. It includes three dozen enterprises. Uninterruptible power supply for the games is one of the requirements of FISU (International University Sports Federation), said earlier the CEO of the Grid Company Ilshat Fardiev. Officially, no restrictions will be introduced, assures the director of the branch of the System Operator - the regional dispatch department (RDU) of Tatarstan Eduard Galeev: "Once a year, enterprises are stopped for repairs. It is possible to stop an enterprise for repairs specifically during the Universiade, they were asked to do so." The letter with the proposal was sent last fall, confirmed Yusupov.

Kazan consumes over 1,000 MW of energy, says Zulfat Mingaliyev, press secretary of the Grid Company. In the summer, consumption increases to 1,080 MW, confirms Galeev. Large enterprises consume about 30%, he continues, small ones another 20%, the rest is the population, transport, shopping centers. According to Galeev, during the games, energy consumption will increase to 1,150 MW: "Universiade facilities will consume within 70-75 MW." "Unfortunately, Kazan does not have enough capacity," complains Mingaliyev, "this is the scourge of all megacities: most of them are energy deficient." According to him, there were also restrictions in China, London, and Barcelona during the Olympics. Emergencies are possible, so additional measures are being taken to improve the reliability of power supply, says Galeev. Deputy CEO of the Radiopribor plant Rashid Apakov confirmed that the enterprise will limit energy consumption by 30-40%, and up to 40% of the staff will be sent on vacation. But the plant does not intend to stop production completely, he says, the plant has "an important task for state supplies." At the Kazan Helicopter Plant (KVZ), auxiliary workshops will be shut down during the Universiade, an employee of the plant said. "The main workshops will work, since we have obligations to customers. If the restriction were complete, up to and including stopping the plant, then losses would inevitably occur," he adds. An employee of OAO Vakuummash confirmed that the enterprise, "like everyone else," intends to limit electricity consumption. The employees of KVZ and Vakuummash refused to name the volume of energy consumption and the expected scale of costs.

The Universiade will stop the workshops
