The cause of the leak of an unknown gas during the disposal of batteries in the city of Ozersk, Chelyabinsk region, due to which 21 people were hospitalized with poisoning, is a violation of safety regulations, the press service of the regional governor reported on Monday.
“There were absolutely no releases of radioactive materials. This is a common disgrace associated with non-compliance with safety regulations. Moreover, similar facts happened there before, but they were hushed up,” the press service reports the words of the head of the region, Mikhail Yurevich.
At the moment the situation is under complete control. The task force continues to work in the city.
As reported, on the morning of March 15, a gaseous substance leaked on the territory of a commercial enterprise adjacent to the Mayak production site. This substance moved towards the Mayak Production Association, after which 21 workers were taken to the hospital. Everyone's condition is satisfactory. People complained of lacrimation, soreness, cough, and redness of the skin.
The circumstances of the incident are currently being established and a pre-investigation is being carried out.
According to preliminary data, the release occurred at the ZAO Tsvetmetservice enterprise during the disposal of batteries. The incident is not related to the activities of FSUE PA Mayak. The radiation, biological and bacteriological situation in the district is normal. The work of CJSC Tsvetmetservice has been temporarily suspended.
