Snowmaking is underway in Sochi. To ensure there is enough for everyone during the Olympic Games, 450 thousand cubic meters of snow must be collected by April 15. “We are confident that next winter there will be no problems with snow on our Olympic tracks. Natural cover and snow from 2013 from snow storage facilities, plus snow created by the artificial snowmaking system - all this will help us create excellent tracks for participants in the 2014 Olympic Games.” , - the general director of the Krasnopolyansk resort "Rosa Khutor" Sergei Bachin has already promised . True, this year the resort itself had to be closed ahead of schedule - the snow melted. We even had to cancel some test competitions, including freestyle skiing, snowboarding and ski jumping.

According to Fanski.ru, the snow will be stored in storage facilities on the slopes of the resort. The largest of them is located at an altitude of 1600 m. About 200 people and 24 snow groomers are involved in harvesting, the preliminary estimate of the work is more than 250 million rubles. The snow in the storage facilities will be covered with a special isothermal sheet, which should prevent melting.

At the same time, environmentalists, as reported by the BBC, are very concerned that trees may be cut down for storage facilities - Rosa Khutor is located on the territory of the Sochi National Park. According to the head of the Sochi branch of the Yabloko party, Vladimir Kimaev, at such a height it is difficult to find a place where there are no trees. Bachin, in turn, considers the fears unfounded - he is confident that there will be enough ski areas, pistes and slopes for storage.
