1918 Decree of the Council of People's Commissars on monuments

95 years ago, on April 12, 1918, a decree of the Council of People's Commissars on the monuments of the republic was issued. He said:

“In commemoration of the great upheaval that has transformed Russia, the Council of People’s Commissars decides: 1) Monuments erected in honor of the kings and their servants and not of interest either from a historical or artistic point of view, are subject to removal from squares and streets and partly transferred to warehouses, partly used for a utilitarian nature ...

3) ... To mobilize artistic forces and organize a wide competition for the development of projects for monuments that should commemorate the great days of the Russian Socialist Revolution.
