The Boeing 737, which was carrying more than a hundred passengers, skidded off the runway when landing in Bali and fell into the sea. All people are alive, the victims were taken to hospitals. The causes of the accident have not yet been announced.

The Lion Air plane was flying to the city of Denpasar in southern Bali from Bandung, the capital of the Indonesian province of West Java.

The Boeing 737 900 ER airliner was produced in 2012 and was in operation for only six months. It was piloted by an experienced Indonesian pilot, and when landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport in equatorial rain conditions, it missed the runway and fell into shallow water. Its fuselage was split in the part closest to the tail. “The crash occurred 50 meters from the landing site,” said Harri Bakti, director general of the civil aviation department of the Indonesian Ministry of Transport.

According to various sources, there were from 100 to 130 people on the plane.

Privately held Lion Air is Indonesia's leading low-cost airline and controls about half of the country's air travel market. Last month, it signed the largest contract in the history of a European aircraft manufacturer with Airbus for the purchase of 234 aircraft worth €18.4 billion. And in February last year, Lion placed an order with the American Boeing for 230 airliners with a total value of $22.4 billion, the order became its largest stories.
