Serbia and Kosovo signed an agreement to normalize relations

Lengthy negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo ended with the signing of an agreement to resolve relations, reports Reuters .

The agreement was concluded in Brussels by the head of the regional government of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, and the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dacic. It was initialed through the mediation of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton.

“Finally, white smoke! Habemus pactum! Happy :))),” wrote the Minister for EU Integration in Kosovo, Vlora Tsitaku, on her Twitter.

Key points of the document concern the northern territories of Kosovo, where the ethnic majority is Serbs. The agreement guarantees the strengthening of the influence of the Serbian population in this territory. Thus, through their representatives they will be able to appoint local police chiefs, reports The Sofia Globe .

In addition, an agreement was reached that the parties will not interfere with each other on the path to European integration. This is extremely important for Serbia, because the European authorities promised Belgrade, if the “Kosovo issue” is resolved, to discuss the conditions for its accession to the European Union.
