Italian President allowed the intrigue: he will save the country, running for a second term

Italian President Georgio Napolitano agreed to put his candidacy for a second term as the head of state.

“I consider providing my candidacy a necessity,” Interfax quotes the president’s statement.

Napolitano previously stated that he was not going to run for the presidency. Apparently, he was forced to change his decision: the presidential elections of Italy started in parliament on Thursday, but during the first five rounds, the deputies failed to choose the head of the country. The sixth tour is expected on Saturday.

Given the political situation in the country, the head of the Italian Democratic Party Pierre Luigi Bersani and the leader of the Freedom Party Silvio Berlusconi previously called on J. Napolitano to stay as president.

Earlier, the practices of re-election of the presidents in Italy did not exist, ITAR-TASS said. In June, Napolitano will be 88 years old.
