Ingushetia opposed direct elections, Yevkurov is ready to run for a second term
Deputies of the People's Assembly of Ingushetia decided to discuss direct elections of the head of the region on April 24.
“The decision of the congress is advisory in nature, but, of course, we will take it into account and will soon make an appropriate decision on this issue,” said the chairman of the republican legislative assembly, Mukharbek Didigov.
Today, delegates to the Congress of the People of Ingushetia in the settlement of Nesterovskoye, Sunzhensky District of the Republic, appealed to the People's Assembly of the Republic with a request to cancel direct elections of the head of the region. As a result, 196 delegates of the congress voted for the cancellation, 17 against.
The head of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, said at the congress that he was ready to take part in the elections of the head of Ingushetia in September. “If there is the will of the people, I am ready to take part in the elections,” Yevkurov said.
Dmitry Medvedev brought back direct elections of governors in May 2012. In December, a bill on the right to abolish direct elections was submitted to the State Duma after some national republics proposed returning to the previous scheme, when the head of the region was chosen by the local parliament.
On March 22, 2013, the State Duma adopted in the third and final reading a law on the right of regions to choose whether to retain direct elections of governors or introduce a procedure for electing the head of a subject through a regional legislative assembly; on April 2, this law was signed by President Vladimir Putin.
